About the Book

(From Amazon) Laura Ingalls and her family are heading to Kansas! Leaving behind their home in the Big Woods of Wisconsin, they travel by covered wagon until they find the perfect spot to build a little house on the prairie. Laura and her sister Mary love exploring the rolling hills around their new home, but the family must soon get to work, farming and hunting and gathering food for themselves and for their livestock. Just when the Ingalls family starts to settle into their new home, they find themselves caught in the middle of a conflict. Will they have to move again?

The nine books in the timeless Little House series tell the story of Laura’s real childhood as an American pioneer, and are cherished by readers of all generations. They offer a unique glimpse into life on the American frontier, and tell the heartwarming, unforgettable story of a loving family.

Age Range – 7 and up

Parental Guidance

Little House on the Prairie is a classic that was published in 1935, which means there are some cultural differences and dated concepts.

  • Racism: The Ingalls family moves to Kansas and encounter Native Americans. Ma exhibits fear of the Natives and Pa views them as human—these viewpoints will be discussed in class to learn respectful words and instill healthy cultural perspectives today.
  • Violence: Throughout the series, children are whipped (or threatened) for disobedience. There are hunting scenes, and guns are present, which may be tough for sensitive readers. Discussions will touch on the differences between the past and today.
  • Illness: The Ingalls family become ill with fever (now suspected to be malaria).

There may also be some challenging vocabulary that we discuss together in the Club; readers are encouraged to bring up vocabulary words for discussion in our time together.
