Come and be a part, to increase creativity, critical thinking, and writing skills!

Does your student enjoy writing stories?
Has your student ever thought about writing a novel? A play? A videogame?
Are you looking for a way to nourish and encourage your student’s creativity in a fun and enjoyable way?

In this Creative Writing Book Club, you’ll enjoy working through all the steps of becoming a better writer!

We’ll start with how to plan and plot (for brainstorming strong ideas), how to develop characters and setting (for creativity, critical thinking, and completeness of our ideas), and we’ll even talk about the different ways creative writing is used in the world today (someone has to write those videogame scripts!). Together, we’ll complete the workbook How to be a Young #Writer—a fun, skills-based book giving our Club a “writing class” feel, to help writers become confident – AND, along the way, we’ll learn about exciting ways to use creative writing in the “real world”!

There are no prerequisites for this club (if your student has a love of writing and wants to learn more, this club is just for you!). Together, we’ll learn about the ins and outs of creativity and the writing process… then, together in our Club time, we’ll share the excitement and joy of our discoveries. You and your Literary Guide, Ms. Schuett, will have so much fun learning about writing and creativity! Come join us!

What Makes this Club Special…

It’s a led by a writer! How to be a Young #Writer is a book written for young writers—and because Ms. Schuett has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, has been teaching young writers for years, and has been writing since she was in the fourth grade (she knows what it’s like to have creativity bubbling up inside yet not know “where to go from there”)… you can be assured, this Club will help you become a better writer!

If for you, it’s time to learn how to make writing fun and easy—then this Club is perfect!

Your Guide is a teacher with wonderful experience, to help your child learn to love writing and learning! As mentioned above, your Guide, Ms. Schuett, is an experienced teacher with a terminal degree (Master of Fine Arts) in storytelling. When you sign up for this Writing Club, you get a professional, highly skilled Guide who helps your student develop a love for writing while learning how to dig deeper into all the different parts of creating a story.

Your Guide

Ms. Anna Schuett is a professional writer and teacher with Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English degree from Concordia University (with an emphasis in Creative Writing) and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, Genre Fiction (MFA, terminal degree) from Western Colorado University.

While studying for her MFA, Ms. Schuett was an elementary school Para-Educator and Librarian/Technology Assistant. Spending a great amount of time with students who struggled with their studies, Ms. Schuett found a love for helping students learn and grow.

Ms. Schuett works as an I.T. Coordinator for Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy clinics across the state of Nebraska. Because of a love of working with students, Ms. Schuett also loves her role as an Literary Guide for our True North Book Clubs—she is thrilled to discover the joy of reading and literary understanding with students of all ages!

Born, raised, and living in Nebraska, USA, Ms. Schuett enjoys reading, quilting, baking, and writing epic fantasy novels—all with a cup of coffee or tea within arm’s reach. You can reach Ms. Schuett at akschuett91@gmail.com.

About the Book

(From Amazon) This book will get you started on your writing journey. It gives practical advice on beating the fear of the blank page, plot structuring, choosing a viewpoint, creating characters, writing killer openings and perfect endings. It will support you as you start writing and keep you going through to getting people reading your stories.

Age Range – 11 years and up, grades 6 – 9

Parental Guidance

Writing is a deeply personal experience, and students will be asked to create ideas from their imagination or experiences, then write their ideas.  We encourage creativity and “out of the box ideas” from all students. As Club leaders, we like to say, “Creativity cannot be ‘bad’… it simply may need to be tweaked!”

Your students may or may not be comfortable sharing their writing – whether it be with a parent or the group. We are sensitive to students’ needs for affirmation with personal creativity, and if your student doesn’t want to share in class, we will work with what is best for the student as communicated by the parent. However, sharing writing in a safe and positive place is what we’re all about – and you can communicate that safety to the student!

The most important purposes of this Club are to get your student’s ideas flowing, to encourage writing and creativity, and to show your student how to critically think through ideation in writing.

Finally, because this is a Club with classes on creativity and personal writing, students may write within a wide range of ideas. If a concerning topic comes up in the Writing Club (e.g., not age-appropriate ideas, or topics containing PG-13 content such as violence), your Guide will immediately guide the topic away from the offending issue to appropriate ideas, and parents will be notified appropriately. Our goal is to encourage healthy creativity that supports the student AND you and your family. We’re here to support you!

Reading Schedule

As you read through the sections each week, simply follow the prompts as they pop up – and together, we’ll discuss the concepts from the reading and the work we did on the prompts as you become a great writer. If you come to a writing prompt that you really don’t like, feel free to skip it, no worries! We’ll discuss how to write for topics “we’re not excited about” and then come up with ideas right there in class together.

  • Week 1: Reading – Pages 6 – 27
  • Week 2: Reading – Pages 28 – 51
  • Week 3: Reading – Pages 52 – 75
  • Week 4: Reading – Pages 76 – 99
