There are a few intense scenes and themes in this story that may be challenging for young readers. \n\n\n\nLanguage: Puzzle\, the donkey\, is often referred to as an ass\, but not in a profane way.Racial Slurs: The Calormenes are referred to as Darkies\, a dated term that is obviously racist. The terminology and implications will be discussed in a culturally sensitive and corrective way so that students are aware of appropriate words\, understandings\, and behaviors today.Fighting/Violence: A dryad dies painfully in front of Tirian; there is fighting with swords\, bows and arrows\, axes\, claws\, and horns which results in deaths; Tirian beheads a Calormene soldier; Jewel uses her horn to stab a Calormene soldier through the heart; and one of the main characters\, Eustace\, kills a man with a sword with his eyes closed.Alcohol: Characters drink wine\, and Shift\, the ape\, develops a drinking problem.Tobacco: Some characters smoke pipes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReading Schedule\n\n\n\nWeek 1: Discussion – Chapters 1-4Week 2: Discussion – Chapters 5-8Week 3: Discussion – Chapters 9-12Week 4: Discussion – Chapters 13-end\n\n\n\n\n\nHow To Begin\n\n\n\nIt’s easy! It is the fifth book in the Narnia series’ chronological order (which is the common order to read the books now).  \n\n\n\nYour Guide is a teacher who has guided students through the Narnia series before! As they sail farther and farther from charted waters\, they discover that their quest is more than they imagined and that the world’s end is only the beginning. \n\n\n\nThe Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the fifth book in C. S. Lewis’s classic fantasy series. For over sixty years\, it has been captivating readers of all ages with magical lands they never dreamed existed for over sixty years. This is a novel that stands on its own\, but if you would like to continue to the journey\, read The Silver Chair\, the sixth book in The Chronicles of Narnia. \n\n\n\nAge Range – 8 and up \n\n\n\n\n\nParental Guidance\n\n\n\nThe Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a children’s classic fantasy that was written by an English scholar and published in 1952\, which means there are some cultural differences and dated concepts. There are a few intense scenes and themes in this story that may be challenging for young readers. But in the end\, it is a battle of honor between two men alone that will decide the fate of an entire world. \n\n\n\nA battle is about to begin in Prince Caspian\, the fourth book in C. S. Lewis’s classic fantasy series\, which has been enchanting readers of all ages for over sixty years. This is a stand-alone novel\, but if you would like to see more of Lucy and Edmund’s adventures\, read The Voyage of the Dawn Treader\, the fifth book in The Chronicles of Narnia. \n\n\n\nAge Range – 8 and up \n\n\n\n\n\nParental Guidance\n\n\n\nPrince Caspian is a children’s classic fantasy that was written by an English scholar and published in 1951\, which means there are some cultural differences and dated concepts. There is discussion of drunkenness and pipe smoking\, and there are a few intense scenes and themes in this story that may be challenging for young readers. For example\, the reader will encounter murder\, beheading\, and battles with swords. While intense\, these elements of war are not overtly graphic in nature. \n\n\n\nThere may also be some challenging vocabulary; readers will be encouraged to bring up vocabulary words for discussion in our time together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReading Schedule\n\n\n\nWeek 1: Discussion – Chapters 1-4Week 2: Discussion – Chapters 5-8Week 3: Discussion – Chapters 9-12Week 4: Discussion – Chapters 13-end\n\n\n\n\n\nHow To Begin\n\n\n\nIt’s easy! When Lucy Pevensie\, the youngest of four siblings living in war-torn England\, accidentally finds herself tumbling through her uncle’s wardrobe\, she is drawn into the magical wood and meets a new friend\, Tumnus. On returning home\, Lucy’s three siblings don’t believe her at first\, but they all end up traveling with her to Narnia to meet Mr. Tumnus—only to discover that he has been arrested for helping Lucy.  \n\n\n\nThe Pevensies find themselves in the middle of quite an adventure in the land of Narnia—a magical world with talking animal where it’s always winter\, but never Christmas. But when almost all hope is lost\, the return of the Great Lion\, Aslan\, signals a great change . . . and a great sacrifice. \n\n\n\nOpen the door and enter a new world! The Lion\, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the second book in C. S. Lewis’s classic fantasy series\, which has been captivating readers of all ages with a magical land and unforgettable characters for over sixty years. \n\n\n\nThis is a stand-alone read\, but if you would like to discover more about Narnia\, pick up The Horse and His Boy\, the third book in The Chronicles of Narnia. \n\n\n\n\n\nParental Guidance\n\n\n\nThe Lion\, the Witch\, and the Wardrobe is a children’s classic fantasy that was written by an English scholar and published in 1950\, which means there are some cultural differences and dated concepts. For example\, the Pevensies are sent to live in the country with Professor Kirke to keep them safe from the London bombings in World War II.  \n\n\n\nLike the title suggests\, there is a White Witch who has evil plans for Narnia. She uses magic to enchant the world and keep Narnia in perpetual winter. She turns creatures to stone if they make a stand against her or break any of her laws. \n\n\n\nThere are intense scenes and themes in this story\, which may be challenging for young readers. For example\, the White Witch does kill the lion Aslan on the stone table. This is an intense moment in the story\, but one of utmost importance as C.S. Lewis writes in allegory and Aslan is the Christ figure in Narnia. Aslan does not stay dead and helps the Pevensies in their most desperate hour. \n\n\n\nThere may also be some challenging vocabulary\, readers will be encouraged to bring those words up for discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReading Schedule\n\n\n\nWeek 1: Discussion – Chapters 1-5Week 2: Discussion – Chapters 6-10Week 3: Discussion – Chapters 11-14Week 4: Discussion –  Chapters 15-end\n\n\n\n\n\nHow To Begin\n\n\n\nIt’s easy! SUMMARY:The Magician’s Nephew
DESCRIPTION:The Magician’s Nephew\n\n\n\nBy C.S. Lewis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDates\n\n\n\nWednesdays\, January 13\, 20\, 27; February 3 \n\n\n\n\n\nTime\n\n\n\n5:00 – 5:45 PM Eastern (4:00 Central\, 3:00 Mountain\, 2:00 Pacific) \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSign Up\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJoin Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat if you could travel between different worlds through magic rings? When Digory and his new friend\, Polly\, are convinced by Uncle Andrew to test out the rings that he made from fairy dust\, the two find themselves caught up in an adventure with talking animals\, destroyed worlds\, and brand new creation. \n\n\n\nJoin this club to read  a children’s classic fantasy from CS Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia Series\, The Magician’s Nephew—where you’ll follow along with Digory and Polly as they travel between worlds\, awaken an evil witch\, and witness the surprising creation of Narnia. This is a fun and educational club—where you and your Literary Guide\, Ms. Schuett\, will analyze the imagery\, themes\, and conflicts within the story—and explore the way C.S. Lewis uses the amazing literary skill of allegory to create Narnia and lay the magical foundation for the rest of the series! \n\n\n\nWhat Makes This Special\n\n\n\nIt’s a Classic! The Magician’s Nephew is not the most well known book in the Chronicles of Narnia. Though it is the sixth published book in the Narnia timeline\, the tale of Digory and Polly’s adventures is chronologically the first book in the Narnia timeline—and Lewis himself said that it didn’t matter in which order the books are read! Because it may be easier for young readers to read the entire Narnia series in chronological order—and you’re interested in your child or teen reading the entire series (or joining the series clubs here!)—the Magician’s Nephew club is a perfect fit! \n\n\n\nAlso\, your student will learn that this book is a classic example of the awesome literary techniques of “worldbuilding” and foreshadowing for the many books to come. \n\n\n\nYour Guide is a teacher with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing—a terminal degree in Genre Fiction\, story\, and writing! And along with her qualifications as a master of story\, Ms. Schuett works with middle school writing students across the globe. She enjoys reading books in all genres\, has led students through Chronicles of Narnia in the past\, and is a CS Lewis enthusiast herself! She has a Bachelor’s (BA) in English\, where she spent significant time reading and studying  classic and modern literature\, and her favorite classes were the ones with extra time discussing the books in a group. So when you sign up for this club\, you’ll get to spend time with a professional\, highly skilled fiction writer and Literary Guide who helps your student develop a love for reading—and learn how to dig deeper into story.  \n\n\n\n\n\nYour Guide\n\n\n\n\n\nMs. Anna Schuett is a professional writer and teacher with Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English degree from Concordia University (with an emphasis in Creative Writing) and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing\, Genre Fiction (MFA\, terminal degree) from Western Colorado University.  \n\n\n\nWhile studying for her MFA\, Ms. Schuett was an elementary school Para-Educator and Librarian/Technology Assistant. Spending a great amount of time with students who struggled with their studies\, Ms. Schuett found a love for helping students learn and grow. \n\n\n\nMs. Schuett currently works as an I.T. Coordinator for Physical\, Occupational\, and Speech Therapy clinics across the state of Nebraska and also designs and maintains her church’s website. Because of a love of working with students\, Ms. Schuett is also excited to be an Instructor Access Instructor with Aquinas Writing Advantage (www.aquinaswritingadvantage.com). \n\n\n\nBorn\, raised\, and living in Nebraska\, USA\, Ms. Schuett enjoys reading\, quilting\, baking\, and writing epic fantasy novels—all with a cup of coffee or tea within arm’s reach. You can reach Ms. Schuett at aschuett.hsc@gmail.com. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nISBN-10 : 0064405052ISBN-13 : 978-0064405058\n\n\n\n(From Amazon) Witness the creation of a magical land in The Magician’s Nephew\, the first title in C. S. Lewis’s classic fantasy series\, which has captivated readers of all ages for over sixty years…. \n\n\n\nOn a daring quest to save a life\, two friends are hurled into another world\, where an evil sorceress seeks to enslave them. But then the lion Aslan’s song weaves itself into the fabric of a new land\, a land that will be known as Narnia. And in Narnia\, all things are possible. \n\n\n\nThis is a stand-alone novel\, but if you want to journey back to Narnia\, read The Lion\, the Witch and the Wardrobe\, the second book in The Chronicles of Narnia. \n\n\n\nAge Range – 8 and up \n\n\n\n\n\nParental Guidance\n\n\n\nThe Magician’s Nephew is a classic children’s fantasy book that was written by an English scholar\, CS Lewis. Published in 1955\, there are some cultural differences and dated concepts. For example\, Digory believes that he is smarter than his friend Polly just because he is a boy—though Polly has no issue challenging the idea.  \n\n\n\nAs the title suggests\, Digory’s Uncle Andrew is a magician who “practices magic” and talks about the existence of fairies. The characters end up traveling to a new world that becomes Narnia\, where “magic” is abundant. \n\n\n\nThere are a few intense scenes and themes in the story that may be challenging for young readers. For example\, Digory stays with his uncle because his mother is ill and dying. And when Digory and Polly are in another world\, the two awaken an evil witch who is violent and destructive. There may also be some challenging vocabulary for your student\, and readers will be encouraged to search for and bring up challenging words in our discussion. Words that parents may like to know about ahead of time include a character with bare arms\, described as a “hussy\,” and when speaking of the dazzling beauty of the Queen\, Digory’s uncle calls her “a superb creature\, a dem fine woman” (in place of profanity). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReading Schedule\n\n\n\nWeek 1: January 13 – Chapters 1-4Week 2: January 20 – Chapters 5-8Week 3: January 27 – Chapters 9-12Week 4: February 3 –  Chapters 13-end\n\n\n\n\n\nHow To Begin\n\n\n\nIt’s easy! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nISBN-10 : 0064405052ISBN-13 : 978-0064405058Buy from Bookshop.org\n\n\n\n(From Amazon) Witness the creation of a magical land in The Magician’s Nephew\, the first title in C.
